Low EMF vs Ultra Low vs Near Zero EMF Saunas

A near zero EMF sauna is one whose infrared heating panels Golden Designs rates below 3 milligauss (mG), the lowest of its three EMF tiers. Golden Designs' figures are Low EMF at 5–10 mG, Ultra Low EMF at 3–5 mG and Near Zero EMF below 3 mG, measured about 2 to 3 inches from the heating panels. This guide explains what those numbers measure, how they compare with everyday electrical sources, how each model in our catalogue is worded, and how much each step down in EMF costs.

What a Near Zero EMF Sauna Rating Actually Measures

An EMF rating on an infrared sauna is a reading of the magnetic field near the heating panels, given in milligauss. Infrared panels are electrical heaters, and the World Health Organization explains that "magnetic fields are created when electric current flows: the greater the current, the stronger the magnetic field," and that the strongest power-frequency fields are "normally found very close to motors and other electrical appliances."

Distance changes the reading more than anything else. The National Cancer Institute's EMF fact sheet notes that magnetic fields "drop precipitously at a distance of about 1 foot from most appliances." That is why Golden Designs states where its figures are measured: about 2 to 3 inches from the panels.

Units also matter when you compare numbers from different sources. Per the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) EMF booklet, 1 microtesla (µT) equals 10 mG, so a 3 mG sauna rating is 0.3 µT.

Low EMF vs Ultra Low vs Near Zero: Golden Designs' Tiers

The three tiers are bands of panel readings, and each step down narrows the band. Here is how they line up and how they usually appear in our product titles.

Tier Golden Designs figure In microtesla Measured at How titles usually say it Where it appears
Low EMF 5–10 mG 0.5–1.0 µT About 2–3 in from panels "Low EMF" or "Low EMF (Under 8MG)" Standard Dynamic and Maxxus models
Ultra Low EMF 3–5 mG 0.3–0.5 µT About 2–3 in from panels "Ultra Low EMF" Dynamic Elite models, Dynamic Monaco
Near Zero EMF Below 3 mG Below 0.3 µT About 2–3 in from panels "Near Zero EMF", "Near Zero EMF (Under 2MG)", "PureTech Near Zero" Maxxus ZF models, Dynamic FS models, PureTech and Reserve models

One wording note: some Dynamic Elite and Monaco listing titles read "Ultra Low EMF (Under 3MG)". Golden Designs' Ultra Low tier is 3–5 mG, and the Dynamic Elite spec sheets we have from Golden Designs state 3–5 mG, so read those models as the Ultra Low tier. If an exact reading matters to you, ask us for that model's spec sheet before you order.

Model-by-Model EMF Wording in Our Catalogue

The fastest way to read a model's tier is the wording in its title, which we quote exactly below. Prices are our current prices.

Model Title wording Tier Heat type
Dynamic Gracia 1–2 person (from $1,999) "Low EMF" Low Far infrared
Dynamic Bellagio 3-person (from $2,699) "Low EMF (Under 8MG)" Low Far infrared
Maxxus Aspen Dual Tech 2-person (from $2,699) "Low EMF (Under 8MG)" Low Far infrared
Maxxus 3-person, hemlock (from $2,999) "Low EMF" Low Far infrared
Dynamic Cordoba Elite 2-person (from $2,499) "Ultra Low EMF" Ultra Low Far infrared
Dynamic Barcelona Elite 1–2 person (from $2,299) "Ultra Low EMF (Under 3MG)" Ultra Low Far infrared
Dynamic Monaco 6-person (from $6,895) "Ultra Low EMF (Under 3MG)" Ultra Low Far infrared
Maxxus 2-person, hemlock (from $3,099) "Near Zero EMF (Under 2MG)" Near Zero Far infrared
Maxxus Montilemar Edition 3-person, red cedar (from $4,699) "Near Zero EMF" Near Zero Far infrared
Dynamic Cordoba 2-person full spectrum (from $3,299) "Full Spectrum Near Zero EMF" Near Zero Full spectrum
Maxxus 3-person corner full spectrum (from $5,299) "Full Spectrum Near Zero EMF (Under 2MG)" Near Zero Full spectrum
Golden Designs 3-person with Himalayan salt bar (from $5,499) "Full Spectrum PureTech Near Zero EMF" Near Zero Full spectrum
Golden Designs Monaco Elite 6-person (from $6,999) "Pure Tech Near Zero" Near Zero Far infrared

The Reserve Edition titles, such as the Reserve Edition 4-person (from $5,499), don't state a tier. Golden Designs' Reserve Edition spec sheets list PureTech Near Zero EMF carbon panels (under 3 mG) alongside near infrared elements.

Putting Sauna EMF Numbers in Context

All three Golden Designs tiers sit far below international exposure guidelines and below many household appliances at close range. The NIEHS booklet lists a median of 300 mG for hair dryers measured 6 inches away, falling to about 1 mG at 1 foot.

The WHO cites ICNIRP guideline limits for the general public of 100 µT at 50 Hz and 83 µT at 60 Hz, the US grid frequency. That is 1,000 mG and 830 mG, or more than 80 times the top of Golden Designs' Low EMF band. WHO also states that "no adverse health effects from low level, long-term exposure to radiofrequency or power frequency fields have been confirmed."

So the honest way to read these tiers is as a comfort and preference choice, not a safety threshold. Lower EMF is a spec you can choose to pay for, the same way you might pay for cedar over hemlock.

Is a Near Zero EMF Sauna Worth the Extra Cost?

A near zero EMF sauna usually costs a few hundred dollars more than the same cabin at the Low tier, and more on larger units. These are the clearest same-cabin comparisons in our catalogue.

Maxxus 2-person, hemlock: the Low EMF version (from $2,699) against the Near Zero EMF version (from $3,099).

Maxxus 3-person, hemlock: the Low EMF version (from $2,999) against the Near Zero EMF version (from $3,699).

Maxxus 3-person corner, hemlock: the Low EMF version (from $3,299) against the Near Zero EMF version (from $4,499).

Dynamic Cordoba 2-person, all three tiers: the Low EMF Cordoba (from $2,299), the Ultra Low EMF Cordoba Elite (from $2,499) and the Near Zero full spectrum Cordoba (from $3,299). The last step also adds near infrared elements, so part of that price gap pays for full spectrum heat rather than EMF alone; our far infrared vs full spectrum guide covers that choice.

Near Zero EMF Sauna Questions Buyers Ask

Does full spectrum change the EMF rating? The ratings attach to the carbon far-infrared panels. Golden Designs' full spectrum spec sheets list, for example, "4 PureTech™ Near Zero EMF (EMF Under 3MG when sitting 2 to 3 inches from the heating panels) FAR IR Carbon Heating Panels, 2 Near IR Elements", and they don't give a separate milligauss figure for the near infrared elements. If that matters to you, ask us before you order.

Do traditional and outdoor saunas have EMF ratings? Not in their titles. Golden Designs' traditional, barrel and outdoor listings in our catalogue don't state an EMF tier, so this comparison applies to the infrared models.

Is "PureTech" the same as Near Zero? No. Golden Designs uses the PureTech name on Near Zero panels and also on some Ultra Low emitters, such as the 2026 Dynamic Veneto, Lucca and Toscana Elite spec sheets. Read the tier word, not the heater brand name. Our Golden Designs model number guide decodes the rest of the codes.

How to Choose Your EMF Tier

Pick the tier by how you will use the sauna and how much the number matters to you. Low EMF suits buyers who want the most cabin for the money and are comfortable with readings in the 5–10 mG band. Ultra Low EMF is the middle step, and on Dynamic it is a small premium for the same footprint. Near Zero EMF suits people who want the lowest rating Golden Designs offers, who plan long, frequent sessions, or who like to sit with their back against the panels.

Whatever the tier, use the panel distance to your advantage: the readings are taken at 2 to 3 inches, and fields fall off quickly with distance.
