HSA & FSA Eligibility Guide — Peak Flow Fitness

HSA & FSA Eligibility Guide — Peak Flow Fitness

This article is general information, not tax or medical advice. Confirm eligibility with your plan administrator; many items require a Letter of Medical Necessity.

Can I Use My HSA or FSA at Peak Flow Fitness?

Possibly — certain fitness, recovery, and wellness equipment may qualify as an eligible HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) expense depending on your specific health needs and provider requirements. This guide will walk you through exactly how to do it.

What Is an HSA and FSA?

An HSA and FSA are tax-advantaged accounts that allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified medical and health-related expenses. How much you save on an eligible purchase depends on your own tax situation.

  • HSA — Available to individuals covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) who meet the other IRS requirements (for example, no other disqualifying health coverage and not enrolled in Medicare). Unused funds generally carry over from year to year (IRS Publication 969).
  • FSA — An employer-established benefit plan. Unused funds are generally forfeited at the end of the plan year unless your plan offers a grace period of up to 2½ months or a limited carryover (IRS Publication 969).

Which Peak Flow Fitness Products May Qualify?

Eligibility depends on whether the purchase is primarily to treat or prevent a specific diagnosed medical condition and is recommended by a licensed healthcare provider. IRS rules exclude expenses that are merely beneficial to general health (IRS Publication 502; see also the IRS FAQ on wellness and general health expenses). None of the categories below is automatically eligible — each typically needs a Letter of Medical Necessity and your plan's approval. Categories that may qualify with the right documentation include:

  • Massage chairs
  • Infrared saunas
  • Cold plunge and cryotherapy equipment
  • Red light therapy devices
  • Recovery equipment
  • Gym machines and exercise equipment

The Key Requirement — Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)

The most important requirement for using your HSA or FSA on fitness and recovery equipment is obtaining a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from your licensed healthcare provider. This is a written statement from your doctor, physical therapist, or specialist confirming that the equipment is medically necessary for your specific condition.

Your LMN should include:

  • Your name and date of birth
  • Your diagnosed medical condition
  • The specific product or equipment being recommended
  • A clear explanation of why the equipment is medically necessary for your treatment
  • Your provider's name, signature, license number, and contact information
  • The date of the letter

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Your HSA/FSA at Peak Flow Fitness

Step 1 — Consult Your Doctor or Healthcare Provider Schedule an appointment and discuss your condition and how the equipment will support your treatment or recovery. Ask them to provide a Letter of Medical Necessity.

Step 2 — Obtain Your Letter of Medical Necessity Have your provider write and sign the LMN on official letterhead. Keep a copy for your records as you may need to submit it to your HSA/FSA administrator.

Step 3 — Check the Rules Before You Buy FSA: ask your plan administrator whether the item qualifies; some plans require pre-approval. HSA: confirm the expense qualifies under IRS rules, and ask a tax advisor if you are unsure.

Step 4 — Make Your Purchase at Peak Flow Fitness Shop at peakflowfitness.com and complete your purchase. Save your itemized receipt as you will need it for reimbursement documentation.

Step 5 — Get Reimbursed and Keep Records FSA: submit a claim to your plan with your itemized receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity. HSA: if you paid another way, you can reimburse yourself from your HSA; keep the receipt and letter with your tax records.

Paying With HSA/FSA Funds

  • Your HSA/FSA card — HSA/FSA cards are often declined by retailers that aren't medical merchants. If yours is declined, pay another way.
  • Reimbursement — FSA: submit a claim to your plan with your itemized receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity. HSA: reimburse yourself from your HSA and keep your records.
  • Itemized receipts — We can provide an itemized receipt for any order. Just ask.

Important Disclaimers

  • Peak Flow Fitness is not a medical provider and cannot guarantee HSA/FSA eligibility for any specific product
  • Eligibility is determined by IRS rules and, for FSAs, your plan administrator
  • Always consult your healthcare provider and plan administrator before making a purchase with the intent to use HSA/FSA funds
  • Misuse of HSA/FSA funds may result in taxes and penalties
